HOW TO MAKE A RUSTIC MIRROR FRAME

February 2, 2017 by crystelmont Leave a Comment

Hey there, everybody! Welcome to my very first blog post! I’m going to show you how I framed my bathroom mirror, but you’re going to have to ignore the poor quality of the photos because they are actually screen shots of a video I took and I didn’t focus properly or have proper lighting since I was doing it at night in my bedroom. But, hopefully you’ll get the gist of how I did it. I can’t promise that my next post will be any better… but I did get a fancy schmancy new camera for Christmas and I pinky promise that someday I’ll learn how to use it and get you some decent photos of the projects I’m working on. So anyways let’s do it to it, ya’ll.

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-54-07-pmAlright… so… can you see that? Yeah. That is not a dungeon, it is my bathroom. And it’s actually quite nice in real life. This is the mirror that came with the vanity we purchased, added shelves onto and painted, and my DIY’in’ little hands couldn’t just leave the mirror sitting there untouched. So I decided to frame it! It was actually quite easy, maybe only taking an hour or so. First, I started by removing the hangers on the back of the mirror so I could reuse them for the new frame.

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-22-38-pm

Next, I removed the actual frame with LOTS of TLC to make sure the mirror stayed in tact.

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-24-17-pm

It was strangely gratifying to remove it, although I’m not sure why because it was a nice, pretty brand new frame.

And voila! You have yourself a naked mirror. Let’s dress it up a little, shall we?

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-29-53-pmI got some 1x4x8 boards of pine at Home Depot for like, $2.You can measure the size of the mirror and the pieces you’ll need and have them make the cuts there, or if you have a saw you can make the cuts at home. When I was measuring I made sure I overlapped the mirror about 3/4 inch on all sides so the mirror wouldn’t fall through the front. ‘Cause you just don’t want that. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-31-24-pmThere are two ways to cut it. If you have a miter saw you can make 45 degree angled cuts on the corners to make it look more like a picture frame, or if you want to give a little more of a rustic look I just went the easy way and did straight cuts on the edges. If you have a chop saw that would certainly be ideal. The one I would have used was being borrowed, so I made do with a circular saw. And yes, I did cut this in my living room to keep from freezing my buns off outside. I made a big mess but it wasn’t anything a little broom couldn’t handle!

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-35-00-pmOnce I made all my cuts and verified that they all fit together I sanded my boards down to get rid of the lettering and marks all over them. Sanding beforehand will also make your stain soak in a little quicker. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-37-51-pmTime to stain! I first went over my boards with Minwax classic grey to cool them down a little. I just applied a little bit with a little cheapie $1 natural bristle brush from walmart and then went over it with a couple of paper towels to spread it out more evenly and take off the excess stain.

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-39-29-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-41-06-pmNext I went over my grey boards with Minwax special walnut. This time I made sure to saturate all my cut edges really well. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-41-59-pmAnd again, wiped off the excess stain with a paper towel. Now they’re all nice and pretty!

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-43-24-pmNow it’s time to assemble! I laid all my boards out face down so I could see where I needed to drill my pocket holes. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-44-55-pmLet me tell you, if you don’t have one of these babies and you’re serious about building things, get one! They’re called Kreg jigs and you can buy them at Home Depot for around $30 or $40. It allows you to drill holes at an angle so you can screw together two flat boards without your nail head sticking out. I drilled two pocket holes on each end of my top and bottom boards.

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-48-31-pmNow typically you should have a drill bit that’s really long that lets you screw your screws in, but I didn’t have one for my drill so I hand to screw them together with a screw driver. No big deal, but I could have done it in .2 seconds with my drill. I believe I used 1 1/4″ screws here inside my pocket holes. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-49-31-pmNow that you’ve got your frame all put together, you’re gonna wanna place your mirror. Like I said, about 3/4″ on all sides should hang over. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-50-53-pmNow here’s a nifty little trick to getting your mirror to sit flat against the wall. WASHERS!!! I just found me some washers at home depot that had a hole in the middle big enough for a screw but too big for the head of the screw to go through. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-51-45-pmI put two along the bottom and top and one on each side. Now, here’s where you gotta be reeeeaaaally careful. You don’t want to screw them in too tight or else your mirror will break. And I’m not just talking about it breaking while you’re screwing it in, I’m talking about when you’re hanging it on the wall or washing the mirror later. It should be snug enough so that the mirror won’t move when you lift it, but not too snug that it has no give whatsoever. I’m speaking from personal experience, folks. screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-11-53-05-pmOnce I got my washers all screwed in I went ahead and put those hangers back on.

2017-01-21_23-22-27_480And looky what we have here! Isn’t she purdy?? I stained it to match the plank wall behind my toilet which I will have a tutorial for here soon.

2017-01-18_12-27-34_680Also, don’t you just love that boxwood wreath?? I made it myself for pretty. darn. cheap. Tutorial for that can be found here. You all are the best. Thanks for taking the time to read this through! Like, subscribe and comment with any questions you have! I’d also love to know if you framed your mirror and how it went!

XOXO

I also made one for my mother-in-law with letters from each of her children in it along with pictures! I can’t wait to give these to them! Don’t wait to make your mothers a book! They will cherish it forever ❤️❤️ Be sure to use my code CRYSTELM50 for 50% off your first #mixbook ! #mixbookpartner
It’s done!! Well, mostly. 😄 But can we all j It’s done!! Well, mostly. 😄 But can we all just appreciate that there is no more rock on the wall and no more weird window going into the shower? I learned a lot with this project, and there’s a lot more to do still like put on baseboard and trim out the windows and build an entertainment center on the wall behind us. But it will be nice to be able to use this room again! If you were following along in stories you might remember that when we removed the wall we found a bunch of rot and mold that we had to remedy, and this room was freezing cold in the winter time because there was the wrong insulation and nothing was sealed properly. What originally was going to be a simple removal of rock turned into an entire stripping of everything in this room down to the studs, re-wiring the electrical, sealing all the gaps, adding the proper insulation, adding fancy new lighting (and getting rid of the boob light😃), installing new sheetrock, tape and texture, and then finally paint! It took some serious work, but thankfully I had Grandpa, @s_montenegro and @ammon.montenegro to help out! So happy it’s finally finished! I’m wiped out, time to take the day off to celebrate my little Evelyn’s birthday!
Jumping for joy that this mudding is almost done! Jumping for joy that this mudding is almost done! Let’s take a look at where we started, shall we? (Swipe) I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... mudding is a perfectionist’s nightmare! Lucky for me I’m no perfectionist 😂 are you?? I’ve never done tape and texture to this scale before and I have been learning A LOT. My learning process goes kind of like this. I get an idea in my head and watch some YouTube videos on how to do it. I jump in with both feet and usually very soon after starting find myself thinking “ohhh.... so THAT’S why they say to do that”. And then I shrug my shoulders and think “well, next time I’ll know!” And then the next time I do. Everything in DIY can be undone and re-done. Sometimes it’s worth a re-do, and sometimes it’s not. Yes, you sacrifice time and convenience, but in the end if you keep your shoulder to the wheel you’ll not only get things exactly how you want it, but you’ll come away with more knowledge, a deeper appreciation for those that do this for a living, a serious sense of accomplishment, and all the many benefits that come from just plain old hard work. Keep pushing, friends. Don’t give up. There is much more to gain than just the end result of your labor.
Happy Easter! He is Risen! I hope you all had a wo Happy Easter! He is Risen! I hope you all had a wonderful day. We had our egg hunt and dyed some eggs and the girls loved it! Speaking of eggs... we have a chicken coop!! It turned out so cute, and Stuart came up with the design all by his little old self! Watch out for my stories for a complete tour! We used mostly scrap wood that was from when we re-did the ceiling in our living room, and we even used the leftover plywood cut down to make some “cedar” shake! I painted it before we shingled the roof with my @gracohomeownersprayers and it was the easiest paint job I’ve ever done! All the details for this build can be found in my highlights. Also... just you wait until I get this yard cleaned up. It’s going to be the cutest little yard with the cutest little coop you ever did see! The only thing I’m bummed about is that we couldn’t make room for any windows for me to put window boxes on. I guess I’ll just have to settle for a cute wreath our the arched door! #chickencoop #diyprojects #diy #backyardchickensofinstagram #backyardchickens
TABLE REVEAL! Isn’t it amazing how this table br TABLE REVEAL! Isn’t it amazing how this table brings this space to life?? I love walking by here and knowing that I built that. All of it. By myself. And it’s so fun seeing my vision for this space become a reality! I am so glad I decided to start over on the stain. Even though it added several hours to an already unpleasant process, I don’t regret that I did because I got it just how I want it. I would have regretted it if I didn’t! Tell me what you think! All the details for this build including stain color can be found in my highlights under “kitchen table”! #girlswhobuild #buildlikeagirl #kitchentable #woodworkher #diningroom #diningroomdecor
How about this bay window, eh?? I am so happy to f How about this bay window, eh?? I am so happy to finally have it finished, especially with the indecision I faced with trimming out the windows. Swipe all the way to see the before! I am loving how the picture frame molding dressed it up, but I will have you know that this rug from @wellwovenrugs was my inspiration from the very beginning. #ad My husband is a practical kind of guy and has always been anti-rug under the dining table, especially with kids. But this one convinced him! Not only is the design beautiful and hides a lot of mess, but it is a truly machine washable rug! I have purchased machine washable rugs before that are so stiff they’re almost not really machine washable, but this rug is so high quality and so pliable that it goes right in so easily! These rugs are also super affordable, ethically made and Well Woven even provides free shipping! So go get ya one, and tell ‘em I sent ya! You can use the code CRYSTEL15 for 15% off orders over $75 until March 31st so hurry hurry hurry! I have the Ripon Machine Washable Vintage Medallion Botanical Border Blue Red Flat-Weave distressed rug in a 5 x 7. All the details for this bay window project can be found in my highlights! #livewellwoven
