HOW I RESIZED MY KITCHEN TABLE

Alright, everybody. So my husband and I have been prepping for medical school to begin this summer, meaning that we are just planning on having $0 to our name for the next 4+ years. So, in an effort to save a little moulah we moved into my sister’s unfinished basement and in exchange for rent are providing most of the labor to finish it. When we first moved in a couple of months ago, this basement was studs. I could literally see through the walls. So my handy dandy know-how-to-do-everything hubby and I threw up the sheetrock (with some help from my sister and brother-in-law, of course), the paint, the wood floors, the baseboard, the doors, built the closet shelves, installed the cabinetry and appliances in the kitchen, built and tiled the shower and all of those little details that you wouldn’t think about unless you were building a house. The only thing that was hired out was the tape and texture on the walls since that’s not something you can really fake and installing the carpet. It has been A. LOT. OF. WORK. To say the least.

So I’m finally in the stages where there isn’t a whole lot of grunt work to do, mostly just me, myself and I painting things and doing other various projects while baby girl is napping. So this week’s project was pretty exciting. In celebration of my husband getting into medical school I was just doing a little surgery on the kitchen table. There isn’t really a dining room in this little three-bedroom basement and the table down here was HUGE. There is a small space in the kitchen area of just flooring between the cabinets and the couch, and ain’t nobody got the money to buy a smaller kitchen table. So, I decided to downsize the one we had. Here she is. And perhaps the photos won’t do her justice, but compared to the size of the room she’s in she’s a doozy. img_0654

So, I began by taking her apart. Now, if you’re interested in UPSIZING your kitchen table this post will probably help you out as well. Really the only thing you’d need to do is buy some 1×6’s from The Home Depot  or Lowes or your choice of lumber store (and border them with 2×6’s if you’re feeling fancy) and build yourself a new table top. This is actually a table that used to be a square 4 foot table with a leaf insert that my sister had upsized, so I didn’t have to build a new tabletop. I just downsized the one my sister had made and used the existing legs. But the process is pretty simple.

img_0656

First, you’re gonna unscrew the frame from the tabletop. This should be pretty standard for all tables whether they’ve been rebuilt or not. You’ll usually find some pocket holes holding the tabletop to the frame. img_0662

You’ll see here that my sister had taken the leaf of the table and inserted it permanently between the two leg sections for added length. When I disassembled it I took that leaf part out and just used the original end leg pieces for my length. img_0663

She built the tabletop out of several 1 x 6’s and then framed them with some 2×6’s. With the inch difference she cut and screwed in some plywood so there would be something to screw the frame to. Here I am taking the plywood out. img_0665

And here it is totally disassembled. So, the legs I just left as they were after I took the leaf out. I was more interested in cutting down that tabletop. I measured the space between my cabinets and the couch, and decided on the size of table that could reasonably fit. The table was roughly 7.5 x 4, and I wanted it to be about 3 x 5. img_0674

Next I took off one of the 1×6’s that made up part of the middle section of the tabletop. img_0676img_0678And then I cut what was remaining down to size, taking into account that I would be adding the 2×6 frame back on. I had to be sure to factor that into my measurement.

img_0679Next I cut down the frame to size. This was the tricky part since I didn’t have a miter saw to work with, only the circular saw.

I knew the angles fit perfectly already, so I mimicked the exact angle by cutting a template with some paper and moving it several inches in to the length I wanted it, then tracing again where I needed to cut.

img_0683img_0684img_0689

I did this with all 4 boards and set it back together to make sure it fit.

img_0690

Since I took off two sides of the tabletop I needed to drill new pocket holes so I could attach it to the frame. Guys, I’ve said this before. If you’re serious about building you need to get your hands on a kreg jig like this one. Technically you could drill a pocket hole without it — I’ve done it. But it’s risky because you could drill too far or at the wrong angle. Basically the idea is to attach two flat boards together by screwing them together, and the pocket hole allows you to hide the head of the screw within the wood so it all lays flat. I’ve got my keg drill bit in my drill and I’m drilling the hole at the angle that I can stick the screw into.  img_0695

Then, screw it to the frame board. img_0696

Then, screw the corners together. img_0697

At this point I flipped my tabletop over and sanded it down to the bare wood. If you’re using new wood you’ll still want to do this, although you won’t need to sand as much. img_0698

And then, add the stain. I’ll show you the method I used to paint/stain the table in another post when I makeover the kitchen chairs that go with the table.

img_0707

We are finally ready to attach! I used the same pocket holes that were already in the legs to attach the frame back onto the table top.img_0735

And there she is! Now just go right on ahead and check out how I refinished my kitchen chairs!

img_0754Tell me what you think!! I’d love to hear your feedback. I’m also in need of some good ideas for centerpieces for my new table. Please comment if you can think of anything cute and practical! And cheap, of course.

Thanks for reading!

XOXO

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .
.
.
While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I ca What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I can officially say I’m finished with my kitchen! I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. But here they are done and I couldn’t be happier about it! #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome #floatingshelves #floatingshelf
I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
