HOW TO SEW EASY BACK TAB CURTAINS

March 4, 2017 by crystelmont 1 Comment

sew easy back tab curtains / how to sew curtains

After furniture, you want to know what makes the biggest difference in home-ifying a bare room? Yep, you guessed it. Curtains! If done right, these can make the room feel so homey, and it’s also a great way to add a pop of color. My living room, while coming along nicely, was still feeling a bit drab. So I decided to whip out my mother’s ancient sewing machine and sew me some back tab curtains!

Tip: When hanging curtains, you’ll want to hang them high, just a few inches off the ceiling if possible to give the illusion that your window is bigger. Also, leave room on the curtain rod to push them clear out to the edge of the window so that when they’re open they’re hanging over the wall rather than the window, which will also appear to enlarge the window and take care of some of that empty wall space. Be sure to measure accordingly!

So here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fabric — I only had enough for two panels but for my size of window I will need to buy enough for two more.
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Curtain liner (I didn’t line my curtains, but if you want to add a curtain liner you can)

These curtains really are so easy to make. First, measure and cut your fabric. You’ll want to add about two extra inches along each side of the panel, and an extra 5 inches onto both the top and bottom. So, in addition to the length of your curtains you’ll want +10 vertical inches and + 4 inches for the width. You’ll also want enough fabric to make several strips to use for the tabs. Mine were 2 inches wide and 7 inches long although 7 inches was a little too long. You’ll want about 6 strips.

My measurements, for 9 foot ceilings were 116″ of fabric which cost me not quite $10 for each panel. Pretty good, eh??

SIDE HEMS

Once you’ve got your fabric cut, lay your fabric pretty side down, then fold one of the long side edges of your curtain 1 inches in. Iron flat all the way down. sew easy back tab curtains

To hide the frayed edge, fold over one more time and iron flat again.

img_1235

Repeat the folds and ironing on the other side.

img_1240

Sew along each of the edges with about 1/4″ seam allowance. Be sure to reverse stitch at the beginning and end of each side to make sure it won’t unravel.

img_1245

BOTTOM HEM

For the bottom, fold in 1 inch and iron.

img_1246

Now fold again 4 inches more and iron again along the seam.

img_1255

Begin sewing along the bottom side, and backstitch where you begin.

img_1257

When you get to the corner, leave your needle buried in the fabric, lift the foot and then sew along the top of the fold with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Do the same with the next corner.

img_1259

Finish sewing down the outer edge and reverse stitch to lock it in.

img_1261

TOP HEM

For the top, repeat the steps for the bottom hem, except stop before you sew. Fold up an inch, iron, fold up another 4 inches, and iron again.

img_1263

Next you’ll want to cut your tabs. I used some of the extra fabric but they’ll mostly be hidden so you can use whatever you’ve got. I cut these about 2 inches wide and 7 inches long, but I wasn’t precise about the measurement because they won’t be seen. I only cut 5 strips but it probably would have been a little better if I made 6.

img_1264

Fold in the long edge of each strip about 1/4″ and iron flat.

img_1268

On the top hem of the curtain, tuck each strip an inch or more under and space tabs evenly across the panel.

img_1270

Fold over the edge of the tab and fold again over the hem just under the top of the curtain.

img_1274

Pin in place. It was easier to place the pins parallel with the tab so I could sew right over it.

img_1289

Now you’ll sew the same way you sewed the bottom hem, except you’ll sew right over the tabs to lock them in place. You’ll also sew all 4 edges instead of just 3.

img_1276

img_1277

Once you get to the edge with the pins, just sew right over them and pull them out after.

img_1285

Once you get to the end, as always, reverse stitch, then cut the thread.

And that’s it! Hang your curtains (I should really do a post on how to hang a curtain rod so it’s straight, because that one was definitely a learning experience for me) by putting the rod through the tabs

img_1297

What do you think? My panels were just about as wide as the fabric would let them be, any they’re just an inch or two short of covering the whole window. I also bought the last of that fabric but they always get more in so I’ll have to wait until it comes in again (or check another walmart) so I can make another panel or two.

I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below if you’ve made curtains like these and how it went, or if you’ve got any other tips for how these might be better!

Love this Crystel. I’ve never seen a tutorial for this type of curtain. Makes me want to get busy and sew some as well!

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .
.
.
While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I ca What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I can officially say I’m finished with my kitchen! I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. But here they are done and I couldn’t be happier about it! #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome #floatingshelves #floatingshelf
I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
