Faux Antiqued Wood Finish using Chalk Paint

Get the faux antiqued wood look using chalk paint

Hellooooo Everybodyyy!! Happy spring!! I love the Spring. I love the fall, too. And the summer. And winter, I love until January 1st. That means I’ve got a whole year of love ahead of me!

So Stuart and I are about to begin medical school in July (and we will hopefully buy a house!!) but in the meantime we’re trying to make a little bit of money to live off of doing summer sales in Austin, Texas. I really do love it here, but this summer we only managed to make it into a 1 bedroom apartment and it is TIIINYYYY. We also have to furnish it ourselves except for the bed and a couch and since we’re only going to be here for a couple of months it definitely wasn’t worth it to bring what we had.

But let me tell you something about the Austin area craigslist. It. Is. AWESOME. And I’m not talking about the furniture section, although that’s pretty great. I’m talking about the FREE section! On any given day you can find some awesome stuff that people are just giving away. I can’t tell you how many beautiful pianos I’ve seen on there (If only we lived here!) and headboards and dressers and bookcases and all kinds of things that have SO much potential. The other day I saw the most beautiful round table with 4 dining chairs that someone was giving away right near where I lived. Unfortunately my husband had our car and even if I had it… it’s only a car. It literally almost killed me to see it get snatched up but I had no choice. WAAAAAAAAAHHHHH.

We did, however, borrow a work truck one time so we could pick up a wingback chair that I painted and that was awesome. Something else that’s nice about living here, though, is that we live in an apartment complex where people are moving in and out all the time. It’s a pretty big complex, so if you take a minute to check near the dumpsters (I know it sounds like dumpster diving but it isn’t. The good stuff is near the dumpsters, not in the dumpsters) you can usually find some pretty awesome furniture too. I found this pretty little baby right next to our apartment.

Not the real baby, the orange one! That baby I made myself, and she was so kind to be my Vanna White for this photo.

It was actually in pretty good shape except for a few pieces of old tape stuck on there good and a couple of minor dings. I could have washed it down and called it good, but instead I went straight to sanding.

I didn’t worry about sanding the spindles because we were using Chalk paint, and I didn’t worry about sanding it down to wood all the way because of the same reason. It was more for cleaning up the old tape and nasty that was on it and for sanding out those little dings, although they weren’t major enough to really be noticeable had I just covered them with paint.

I wiped it down after sanding with a slightly damp paper towel to take off all the sawdust and I started painting.

I used the Americana Decor chalk paint in Everlasting you can get from Home Depot (8 bucks for this teeny little bottle!) and painted the whole thing. Granted, chalk paint has great coverage so it does go a long way, but still. I wanted to give this brand a try, but I think next time I’ll stick to my homemade chalk paint.

Looking back, I also probably would have gone with a different color for the base, like more of a light grey to get that grey-ish neutral color that I love so much. This is what I had on hand, though, so I made do.

I painted it with a natural bristle brush so it would show the brush strokes, and I feel like that helped to add to the vintage look.

Next, I began adding the dark wax. It’s a cream wax, which I like because it goes on like paint. I’m not sure how a regular wax would behave but I would like to try it.

At first I began by adding it on with a brush, letting it dry for just a second, then wiping it off, but eventually I figured out that a better way was to just get a little bit on your brush and dry brush it on. The other way made it a little spotty because it would dry unevenly and it also wasted the wax that soaked into the rag. I also liked the look that the brush gave it. The main trick here though it to put on less first, and then add more if you need it. It’s harder to take it off once it’s dry than it is to put more on.

And there it is! The wax dries pretty quickly, so I was almost immediately ready to put it in the house where it belonged. The color of the wax is fine, but I maybe would have preferred something with a little cooler tone. Or like I said, making the base color be a little cooler to tone it down.

And here it is in its place. With the neutral wall color behind it it actually doesn’t look too bad, eh?? Oh, and here’s a sneak peak of the wingback chair I painted too!! You’re gonna wanna stay tuned for that one for sure.

See those pretty faux flowers? I found a bouquet at hobby lobby for $6 at 50% off, and added a sprig or two of lambs ear to it for another $3 or so at 50% off. The vase was only $1.27!

Wanna know a nifty secret I learned about Hobby Lobby? They go through rotations for what they put on sale. Each week they put different sections of the store on sale, and about every 4 weeks or so it all starts over, usually at 50% off! So if you really want that pretty vase, or that wreath, just check weekly to see when it will be half off! You may even be able to ask one of the workers when it will happen. I know there are also coupons you can use to make it all even cheaper.

Thanks for tuning in, everybody! Ya’ll are the best. I’d love to know if you try this out and how it works for you! Or if you used different products. Let me know what you think!

XOXO

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .
.
.
While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I ca What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I can officially say I’m finished with my kitchen! I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. But here they are done and I couldn’t be happier about it! #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome #floatingshelves #floatingshelf
I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
