DIY Curvy Nightstand

June 22, 2017 by crystelmont 2 Comments

You guys. I can’t even tell you how excited I am about today’s project. With my limited tools and knowledge of woodworking I was just about resigned to the fact that I would probably never be able to build anything that wasn’t square unless I spent the time and money to buy all the right tools and learn how to make it. Well, since my husband is starting medical school and I am a stay at home mom, that basically means we don’t have it in the budget. Don’t get me wrong, though. I would happily do it if money wasn’t an issue because I have found that I love woodworking THAT MUCH. But then I came across this beautiful curvy nightstand found at Her Tool Belt and I knew I just had to build it!

DIY / How to Build a Curvy Nightstand / End Table

You want to know the best part about this whole thing? The only tools you need is a jigsaw, a kreg jig, and a miter saw. I thought for sure it would require more advanced tools than that but it doesn’t! I’m seriously in love!! I built two of them and made them 27″ tall, the right height to be a nightstand. If you want them to be end tables all you need to do is build the 23″ version and you’re set!

Materials

  • 2x10x10
  • 1×8
  • Kreg jig
  • Miter saw
  • Jigsaw (although if you have a bandsaw that would be better)
  • Measuring tape
  • paint stick
  • clamps
  • 2″ screws
  • 1 1/4″ screws
  • 60 grit sandpaper

Don’t let this project intimidate you, it’s really not as difficult as you might think. My first one was quite imperfect and took me a little longer, but when I made the second one I did the whole thing in a couple of hours! Oh, and did I mention I did it all on my kitchen table? Living in a one-bedroom apartment means you might have to do that. It’s okay though, because we have this awesome thing called a vacuum that takes care of all the mess!

I started by building the tabletop. I happened to have a piece of 1×8 leftover from another project, so I cut it down into 3 pieces 18″ long and lined them up. I drew an X from corner to corner to find my center. Build a curvy side table / build a curvy nightstand

To draw the circle, I grabbed my paint stick (that I had already used for building my round picture frame), drilled a hole at 1 inch in, then again at 9 1/2″. I drove a nail through the 1″ hole and stuck a pencil through the other, then pivoted the paint stick to draw a perfect circle! Simple, right?!Build a curvy side table / build a curvy nightstand

The next order of business was to drill my pocket holes. I didn’t want to drill the holes first because I wanted to make sure they were going to be safely within the circle so I wouldn’t cut them off. Once the holes were drilled I attached the boards with 1 1/4″ screws. Build a curvy side table / build a curvy nightstandBuild a curvy side table / build a curvy nightstand

Next I cut out the circle. I clamped the board tight to my table and went carefully around the lines with my jigsaw. Build a curvy side table / build a curvy nightstand

Now you should have your tabletop.

I cut mine to 30 inches since I was building a taller table, and then I traced the patterns found on Her Tool Belt onto the wood. On her site she mentions nesting the two patterns to trace two legs on the same piece of wood, but I found at least with the 27″ table that was not possible. I also used my miter saw to make as many of the straight cuts as I could because the jigsaw is much less precise and can take longer to cut the wood. This saved me quite a bit of time. Build a curvy side table / build a curvy nightstand

After I cut out my first table leg I was so discouraged. I was thinking “this is not going to turn out well”. I had all kinds of cuts in my wood that either should not have been there or that should have been more precise but I decided not to sweat it and kept on going. I did find that as I cut out more of the table legs they became much easier to cut, and looked much prettier. You know how your parents always say that practice makes perfect? Well that applies here too. You can do it!!

Once I had all of my pieces cut out I did all the heavy sanding. I started by using 60 grit sandpaper because I had LOTS of things to sand down. I also found that in a couple of the grooves I couldn’t get my hand sander in there so I sanded them by hand. There were some parts where my jigsaw wasn’t exactly level when I made the cut so my edges weren’t straight, but I found that my sanding made up for a lot of that. I also found that you can’t really tell that not everything is square once you put it all together and get some paint on it. This is also where I cut down two of the legs 3/4″ on the edge that I would be joining all of the legs together. This made it so two of my legs weren’t sticking out further than the other two. For more clarification Her Tool Belt does a great job of explaining this. Build a curvy nightstand, DIY curvy end table

Next I put it all together. This was the trickiest part, but it really wasn’t that tricky. I wanted to make sure that my screws weren’t going to run into each other when I screwed everything in. With the first two pieces, I drilled two pocket holes on the very top and very bottom of the joint, then screwed them together. To make sure your table is level, don’t try to line up the center. If yours turns out like mine the joining edges will all be different sizes. (Not sure how because I traced the same pattern onto each one). You’ll want to stand it on end and make sure the bottoms of your legs, the part that is touching the floor is level. Then screw it in that way. Build a curvy nightstand, DIY curvy end table

With the other two legs (the ones I cut the 3/4″ off of) I drilled one pocket hole on the inside and one right in the middle of the leg. I found that if I were to drill a pocket hole next to the other one it would take off a big chunk of the corner and I didn’t want that to happen.

Attach them all together with 2″ screws.

Almost there! Repeat the same process with the 4th leg, only this time make sure to drill the holes on the opposite side of the 3rd leg.

I filled my pocket holes with these fillers you can find at home depot, then covered them up with wood filler.

Once the wood filler was all dry I sanded it down to be level with the wood. This is what it looks like unfinished after I went over the whole thing with a 220 grit sandpaper! Isn’t it beautiful??

For the paint I used a sample of Behr Marquee paint in pure white, then went over it with a layer of shellac so the dark glaze wouldn’t muddy up the white too much. How to build a curvy nightstand / DIY curvy end table

I sanded down all the corners ever so slightly so the glaze would soak in.How to build a curvy nightstand / DIY curvy end table

I brushed the glaze onto a small section, then quickly wiped it off. Be careful, if you’re doing it on a very hot day like I did it will dry very quickly, then leave a muddy mess. So small sections are best to work in. How to build a curvy nightstand / DIY curvy end table

I wanted the glaze to especially soak into the edges I had sanded, so I made sure to focus on these areas most. Once finished, I went over with a layer of clear wax mixed with just a touch of white paint to tint it, and that helped to lighten up some of the glaze. How to build a curvy nightstand / DIY curvy end table

So pretty, right?! I seriously am extra proud of this one.

Because I already had the 1×8 and the paint, this whole project cost me about $10 for the 2x10x10 board. Is that a steal or what?! Oh, and see that painted chair, that round wooden frame and that throw pillow? I DIY’d them all! Check ’em out!

Thanks for visiting, I would love to know if you make one of these! Leave a note in the comments below if you have any questions!

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .
.
.
While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I ca What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I can officially say I’m finished with my kitchen! I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. But here they are done and I couldn’t be happier about it! #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome #floatingshelves #floatingshelf
I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
