The Cheapest and Easiest Way to DIY Shiplap

August 17, 2018 by crystelmont 17 Comments

Do you ever have projects that are so easy and satisfying to do that you don’t want them to end? No? Well, me either. But I did kinda sorta start to maybe almost feel something like that about this easy DIY shiplap wall that my sister and I put together. (But I’ll be honest, it was mostly my sister). There is something satisfying about installing shiplap on a big open wall, though. Especially when you’re working with straight boards and straight walls. (Not exactly the case with this one, but it was close).

We’ve been working on remodeling the Little Stone Cottage that my sister just purchased to turn into a vacation rental. (It’s is now open for booking!!) It’s seriously the cutest thing! You can check out how I renovated the bathroom by painting and installing beadboard wainscoting on the walls, updating the old medicine cabinet, installing open shelving over the laundry area, painting the shower, and painting the tile floors.

So, I’m finally ready to show you a section of the kitchen area. This is how it looked when we started. shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

You can’t really tell in this picture, but off to the side in that wall there is the door to a pantry that fills the space under the stairs. Since this was to become a vacation rental and we already had plenty of cabinet space, we didn’t really need a pantry. So my sister Haylee opened up that wall and re-framed the door to fit the refrigerator, then slide the refrigerator into the wall to open up space. She then knocked out those old cabinets and suddenly we had room for the dining table! Voi la!shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

Getting Started

Now onto the fun stuff. Haylee purchased 4 sheets of 4×8 particle board at Lowe’s for about $10 a piece and had them ripped long-ways into 5 3/4″ strips, which Lowe’s does for free. This accounted for the width that the saw blade takes out to make all of the pieces as even as possible. Before we nailed up the first piece, we made sure to use a level to make sure it was level rather than trusting the walls to be square. After all, the house is over 80 years old. Once we did that it was smooth sailing from there, and we were able to just use that first piece as our guide.

Since there were two of us working on the wall, we started from the top and worked our way down brad nailing the strips onto the wall using a nickel to space the gaps. This allowed us to decide what we wanted to do with the bottom piece once we knew where it would land. We didn’t need it to hit the floor, we just needed it to go low enough that we would be able to cover the remaining space with the baseboard.

If it were just one of us doing the project, however, we would have started from the bottom up because it is easier to rest the strips  on top of the nickels and nail it in with the other hand than it is to hold up the board and place the nickels and nail it in. On the sections of the wall that were longer than the 8 foot strips, we simply cut the remaining piece and butted it up against the longer strip. Then we switched up the 8 foot strip and put it on the opposite end of the wall on the next row so we wouldn’t have two seams stacked on top of each other. shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

Then with what felt like as quick as you could bat an eye, it was all done! We did have to notch out around the outlet which was a little bit tricky, but Haylee is pro at that kind of stuff and made it look like a piece of cake. (The process, not the actual outlet. THAT would be impressive 🙂 )shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

Finish it up

Once we had the wall all nailed up all we needed to do was caulk any gaps between the particle board and the door frame and opposite wall. Caulk fixes everything! I like THIS KIND) The very last step was to paint! At first we thought that since we were using particle board for our shiplap we didn’t want to use an acrylic paint because the water in it would absorb and cause the particle board to swell. After testing a piece, though, we discovered that it did not swell! So that was nice. shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

Doesn’t it look like a million bucks?! And to think it only cost about $40 not including the paint. Now that’s a steal!

I also want to show you how we installed the same shiplap on the peninsula that separates the kitchen from the living space. This is what it looked like before:shiplap kitchen island, shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

Kind of just a boring old wall. Now I’ll show you the after, with a sneak peak (lucky you!) of the finished kitchen shelving behind that I’ll be doing a post on later. shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

What do you think about this DIY shiplap?? If you decide you want to come back later and read this again, feel free to pin this image here!diy shiplap, shiplap wall, shiplap DIY, shiplap ideas, farmhousedecor, unpainted shiplap, whitekitchen, shiplapping, dyi shiplap, faux shiplap, white shiplap, farmhousestyle, shiplap diy, installing shiplap walls, shiplap walls, kitchen walls, fauxed walls, dyi walls, shiplack walls, walls ideas, shiplap interior walls

Thanks for tuning in! I’m excited to show you all the rest of the kitchen area so keep an eye out for more posts!

XOXO,

Looks lovely! I was considering doing this is our bathroom until you mentioned your concern about water in the acrylic paint. Now I am concerned…what do you think? Any suggestions on alternatives?
    Thank you!

Because we were using the smooth side of the particle board the paint didn’t actually absorb into the wood, it just floated on top like it would do on sheetrock or any other smooth surface. It didn’t end up being a problem at all! If you’re actually worried about it though, you can definitely use a primer or an oil-based paint!

Couldn’t you see the particle board through the paint, particle board has such a distinct look and I wouldn’t want it to show through the paint.

The particle board has two sides, one that is smooth just like MDF. I just made sure the smooth side was out and you wouldn’t even know it is particle board!

Could you please let me know the thickness of the particle board you used?

The stuff we used I believe was half an inch!

With the half inch thickness did you have to add spacers behind your outlet for the plug to fit flush? I’m getting ready to do a wall in my bedroom and want to have everything ready so the job can be completed as smoothly as possible. Thanks!

I actually did not, we cut it so we could just pull it out and attach it to the shiplap. The thing we had to get was longer screws to screw the outlet in place. Hope that helps!

Good question! We just used 1 1/4″ brad nails. If you’re worried about it you can also use caulk or silicone on the back to help it stick but the brad nails were sufficient for us.

Did you use caulk on the three pieces that were joined together that were longer than 8 foot pieces? Is that working well? Thanks!

Wood filler or spackle will hide your seam a lot better than caulk will since caulk shrinks!

My bedroom wall currently has a brown paint on it. My husband is going to put up particle board on one wall and I want to paint it cream. Do I have to paint the wall cream too before he starts to hang up the boards?

You don’t have to if you don’t want! It really depends on your spacing I think. If I was doing pretty minimal spacing like a nickel, I probably wouldn’t worry about painting because it would just make the lines look black. But painting cream behind it would also look nice!

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .

While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
