The Easiest way to Paint an Exterior Door

September 17, 2018 by crystelmont 4 Comments

I’ve had this hankering to paint my front door ever since I moved into this house because the front exterior house was just kind of… blah. Buuuuut… the problem was I don’t actually own this house. Our landlords are totally AWESOME and when we moved in said they were open to ideas for fixing up the place since they had just barely purchased the home. Uh… yeah. **insert hand raising emoji here** I THINK I can help you out with that. I told her that I was a DIY home decor blogger and she basically gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted in the home, provided I stuck to neutral colors. Oh, and did I mention she paid for EVERYTHING?? Holla! I ran the idea by her early on for painting the front door navy blue and she was a little hesitant on the idea. Then after living here for 10 months and seeing how nice the place turned out she finally gave me the go ahead to paint it! So I finally did it. Here’s what she looked like before, in all her glory. front doors colors blue front door colored front door ideas painting front door front door wreath front door appeal front doors ideas painted front door ideas beautiful front doors front door decor ideas front ideas door front door paint front door decoration front door update navy front door navy blue front door wreath inspiration interchangeable wreath wreath dyi autumn wreath beautiful wreaths front doors colors blue front door colored front door ideas painting front door front door wreath front door appeal front doors ideas painted front door ideas beautiful front doors front door decor ideas front ideas door front door paint front door decoration front door update navy front door navy blue front door wreath inspiration interchangeable wreath wreath dyi autumn wreath beautiful wreaths

Materials

150 or higher grit sandpaper

Krud Kutter or heavy duty cleaner

Painters tape

ArtMinds Outdoor Paint

Paint brush

Foam roller

I started by giving it a good sanding. You don’t need to sand it all the way down, just rough it up with some 150 grit or higher so that the paint has something to grip. This also got rid of some of the gunk that has built up over the years.

Next, clean it REEEEAAAALLLY well with a good cleaner. I like to use Krud Kutter for most of my major cleaning projects since it’s non-toxic and doesn’t smell, plus it gets the job done! I like to do this after the sanding so I can clean it of dust all in the same step.

Next, tape everything off or if you’re one of those overachievers you can remove the door hardware.

Grab some rubbing alcohol and use a cotton swab to rub some on. If the paint comes off, it’s latex paint. If you’ve got an oil based paint on your door, or an oil-based finish over a stained door, you’ll want to use a primer before you paint. Nobody wants peeling paint!

Now finally, time to paint! I used the ArtMinds Outdoor paint in the color Marina, but I wanted my door to be a darker navy blue so I mixed in about half of the 4 ounce bottle of Tire Swing with the Marina.

This paint dries quickly and will show brush strokes, so I worked one section at a time using the brush first and then going over the wet paint with a foam roller to smooth it out. Going over it with the roller created some bubbles in the paint that would eventually go away with a few more times rolling over it.

Last step, let it dry and take the tape off! I did two coats of the paint on my door.

I decided I was only going to paint the outside of my door because I’m not sure yet how the navy will look on the interior. But doesn’t it look nice??? I made that wreath, too for like, 17 bucks.

Do you think it would be good for shutters as well? I want to upgrade one day to the farmhouse wood shutters but for now I just need to paint my existing ones for the time being.

Absolutely! This paint will hold up great on shutters. Just make sure your shutters are properly primed if they’re currently wood or another material that isn’t already painted.

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .
.
.
While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I ca What’s this, two posts in one day?! I think I can officially say I’m finished with my kitchen! I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. But here they are done and I couldn’t be happier about it! #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome #floatingshelves #floatingshelf
I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
