How to DIY Picture Frame Molding

August 10, 2020 by crystelmont Leave a Comment

Completed wall with picture frame molding

I love the classic look of picture frame molding and have always wanted a house with beautiful molding on my walls. But when I looked into the cost I realized that if I bought enough molding of even the cheapest stuff I found, I would have spent $50 for just this one wall. $50 might not seem like a lot to some, but at the time $50 was more than I had for this project. I would need to buy 12 eight foot pieces for this size of wall.

So as I got to thinking about it, I realized that I could improvise by using what I had on hand. Let me show you what I did!

Painted wall before molding was installed

In case you missed it, click here to see how I removed the door that was going into our backyard. At the time it was the only door going to out backyard, so we remedied that very quickly. Since we freed up this wall space, I wanted to do something extra special before I put my bed back on it.

I realized that I could use some of the scrap pieces of MDF I had left over from when I built out my mudroom HERE and HERE. It took little bit more work cutting them down and sanding them all, but in the end it was totally worth it!

Getting Started

Materials:

1 sheet 1/2″ or 3/4″ MDF

Finish Nailer

Miter Saw

Table Saw

48 inch Level

Measuring Tape

Pencil

Paintable Caulk

Caulk Gun

Wood Filler

Paint and Paint Brush

Me using my level to draw lines on my wall

I started out by measuring my wall and using a level to make marks where I wanted my molding to be, with 4 inches in between. I was sure to go off the level and not off my wall. Our home is 96 years old and nothing is straight. If I had gone off my wall or ceiling it would have looked lopsided and I would have been frustrated.

Prepping the Molding

After I drew all my lines, I prepped and cut my boards.

Table saw with MDF being cut down to 1 inch

The MDF I had was 3/4″ thick, so I cut it down into 1″ strips and then trimmed it down depthways so that it was only 1/2″ thick. (Pretty sure “depthways” isn’t a word but you get the picture 🙂 ) Then I sanded down the sides with 150 grit sandpaper on my orbital sander to remove saw marks. When I put it up on my wall I made sure the factory smooth side was facing out.

Me installing the molding with a finish nailer

When I started cutting I mitered the corners at a 45 degree angle. I cut my boards with identical lengths all at once to make things go more quickly. This also ensured that my picture frames were square even if my markings on the wall were not.

Wall partially completed

I attached them to my wall using 1 1/4″ brad nails in my finish nailer. I also continued using my level as I put them up because I didn’t trust my lines completely.

Molding on wall completed

For the chair rail, since my wall was longer than 8 feet I cut the two joining pieces at an angle. Doing it this way allowed them to hide the seam better. I didn’t get a picture of this, I’m sorry!

Corner of molding showing 1/4" pieces nailed in

I could have left it with just the 1″ pieces, but I wanted to add a little more interest by adding some 1/4″ strips onto the insides of my boxes. While I felt like this gave it some good dimension, in hindsight I’m wishing I would have kept it 1/4″ deep but made it 1/2″ wide, since the added detail is not very visible from the doorway. One thing to note is that doing this extra step doubles the amount of caulking that needs to be done.

Caulk, Wood Filler, and Paint

Me caulking and wood fillering the molding

Next up, wood filler! I always do this step before caulking because wood filler needs time to dry so it can be sanded down. I used wood filler on the flat parts of the joint, and caulk on all the inside and outside corners. You can use either caulk or wood filler on nail holes, but keep in mind that caulk has a tendency to shrink significantly when it dries so the nail holes might be slightly visible still. Wood filler will also shrink, but you can overfill your holes and it will sand down smooth.

Molding partially painted

I painted my wall Boothbay Gray by Benjamin Moore before I added my molding. I painted my wall beforehand which made it easier to hand brush my molding when it was done.

Something else to take into consideration is that the cut sides of the MDF will soak up the paint. You may want to first prime your MDF, or you can be like me and put on multiple coats of paint.

And there she is! Isn’t she purdy? The total cost for this project was the cost of a tube of caulk since I already had the nails, the MDF, the wood filler and the paint. But if you were trying to do this sort of molding without having scraps, you could get yourself a sheet of 1/2″ MDF which would be enough to do many walls for about 25 bucks.

Here’s me and my 6 month pregnant self with the finished wall! Whaddya think? Would you do it?

Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy Three days ago I woke up to some alarmingly heavy bleeding, and thankfully Stuart was there when I called him because I passed out twice. I could have had a serious fall if he had not been there to catch me. We went to the hospital and they discovered some leftover placenta in my uterus and were able to do a D and C to clear me out. When they gave us our discharge papers and I was getting into the wheelchair I passed out again, this time for a full 90 seconds. They decided to keep us overnight, but Stuart had to sleep in our van because they weren’t letting visitors in the hospital. Despite all the IV fluids they were giving me my blood pressure was still very low, and my hemoglobin levels tanked. They ended up giving me two blood transfusions which helped, but didn’t bring my blood pressure up. Thankfully we were close to family and they were able to come stay with baby Charlotte so we didn’t have to take her to the emergency room with us during this pandemic. And thankfully I had some stores of breast milk and baby Charlotte took to a bottle just fine. When we finally got home yesterday, my sweet sisters in law not only stayed with our baby, but @satsusie and LaRae had cleaned our house, did our laundry, washed and changed our sheets, and made us a yummy lunch. My other sisters @hayleejosephprete and Sara Ann arranged to bring us meals along with some other wonderful ladies from our ward, including regular checkups and treats dropped off from my sweet ministering sisters. Our other girls have been with grandma and grandpa in Las Vegas having the time of their lives and thankfully are able to keep them there a little longer while I recover some more. We could not feel more blessed to have such a strong family support system and to be surrounded by such selfless people here in Hurricane! My grandmother died of hemorrhaging from childbirth, I’m so grateful for modern medicine and wonderful healthcare workers and for my wonderful husband who took such good care of me in the middle of all of his medical school craziness.
Just before midnight on Thursday night I began hav Just before midnight on Thursday night I began having consistent, firm contractions and I knew that baby girl had finally decided to make her way to us. By 2:00 they were more frequent and starting to get painful, and by 3:15 am it was time to drive to the hospital 20 minutes away. When I arrived I was already dilated to a 9. My sister-in-law @tiastoutphoto was supposed to be able to come to the hospital to photograph the birth of baby Charlotte. My sister @hayleejosephprete was supposed to be able to come to the hospital as my doula to help me navigate through my first unmedicated birth, but with the COVID-19 situation the hospital put firm restrictions on one visitor and one contracted certified doula, and since she wasn’t certified they wouldn’t let her in and she had to guide Stuart on what to do via FaceTime from the hospital parking lot. This was terrifying for me, especially on top of the stress of being out of the safety of my home, away from my girls at a hospital during this pandemic as a pregnant woman with a soon-to-be newborn. I didn’t feel fully prepared to go through with it without an epidural, but by the time I found out my sister couldn’t be there with me I was already committed. My amazing OB/Gyn, Dr Coby Brown was supposed to be on vacation, but with the virus his plans were canceled and he stayed home with his family. Even though he was technically still on vacation and another Doctor was on call he still came in for my delivery which I am so grateful for! I labored for just over an hour at the hospital with Stuart applying counter-pressure during contractions as my sister was directing, and with one intense push at 4:58 baby girl finally arrived. When we got home from the hospital later that day, my sister-in-law came over to capture the reactions of my other little girls as they finally got to meet their baby Charlotte whom they have been anticipating would arrive for so long. These images are so candid and so raw. They represent my whole life. There is nothing scripted, nothing planned. We don’t have matching outfits, my makeup isn’t done, and my girls faces aren’t washed. This is my life, and she couldn’t have captured it more perfectly.
Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have Happy Saturday, friends! I am so thrilled to have so many new friends on here and I thought a proper introduction was in order! My husband and I are currently journeying through the medical school grind, he being in his second year about to prepare for his boards. It has been a long road to get here and we have an even longer road still to travel, especially since we are also going through the Air Force. It has put me in a position, however, to learn how to do more things myself which has been such a blessing in disguise! Since Stuart is so busy it’s rare that you’ll catch glimpses of him, but I will try harder to show him off because I know you’ll all enjoy looking at his handsome face as much as I do 😆.

Stuart and I met in Provo, Utah when he was attending BYU and I was finishing up hair school. We now have two beautiful (and sassy!) little girls and one more little girl due any day now! .

Here’s a fun fact that will probably blow your minds: this baby I’m about to have will be my parent’s 99th grandchild! I am the 15th of 16 children and my husband is the oldest of 11 children. Now how’s that for a massive family? .
.
.
And to answer some questions I know I will get, yes they’re all biological, yes there are two sets of twins (back to back, a year apart!) and yes, my parents did have a TV 😆. They just really like kids!
As I’ve taken on these different remodeling proj As I’ve taken on these different remodeling projects it has been so fun to try new things and figure out what exactly my design style is. I have yet to take on a home of my own where my own input and my own budget are the only things I need to consider before remodeling, but I really have been so lucky to have all the opportunities I have to experiment on other people’s homes! I did this bathroom a couple of years ago at my sister’s Air BNB over the course of about a month, and it was such a fun project! .
.
.
While the remodels I’ve been doing tend to lean more toward cottage/farmhouse style, I think my preferred style is closer to a more traditional craftsman or even modern traditional. Here’s to new opportunities to experiment with other styles of decor!

.
The list of DIY projects in this bathroom are as follows: paint shower, remove wall tile, install beadboard and paint all walls, remove all shelving and rebuild open shelving, stencil tiled floors, trim out vanity (not pictured), paint all the things!!

I finally got those floating shelves finished — I’ll tell you what, it was a struggle to get back to working on them. But here they are done and I couldn’t be happier about it! #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome #floatingshelves #floatingshelf
I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple I know I’ve left you all hanging the last couple days on finishing up my floating shelves but truth be told I haven’t even worked on them! I’m trying to learn to give myself permission to slow down and relax, and a couple of poor nights sleep have motivated me to do just that. I had a nice nap today though and I think I’m going to try to finish them up! I’m still putting off all the things I should be doing to get ready for this baby to come... but those kinds of projects don’t seem quite as exciting to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #buildlikeagirl #womanbuilder #momtrepreneur #diyblogger #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomedecor #diyhomeprojects #diyhomeimprovement #diyinterior #diyinteriordesign #diydesign #homedecoratingideas #homedecorations #homedecorator #homedecorlove #homedecorate #decorateyourhome
